A bettor made nearly half a million dollars from wagers on the downfall of Venezuela's president immediately preceding it was publicly declared, raising questions about the possibility of profiting from confidential information of American actions.
Wagers on Polymarket, a blockchain-based service, that the Venezuelan president would be no longer in control by the month's conclusion increased in the time leading up to Donald Trump declared on January 3rd that Maduro had been taken into custody.
A particular user, which became a member in December and took four positions, all on political events in Venezuela, made more than $436,000 from a starting bet of over $32,000.
It remains unclear. This unidentified trader had only a string of letters and numbers for identification.
Platform data shows that users put the odds of the president's removal at just under 7% in the afternoon of Friday, January 2nd.
But the market's assessment had climbed to 11% by shortly before midnight and surged in the morning of Saturday, indicating a sharp shift in market sentiment right before the social media post was made.
"This particular bet has all the characteristics of a trade based on confidential knowledge," stated a financial reform advocate.
A handful of other individuals also made significant sums from predicting the capture.
Some lawmakers are growing concerned.
Proposed legislation presented on recently would prevent government employees from participating on forecasting platforms if they have "insider details" related to a wager.
Prediction markets have surged in popularity in the past few years, with traders able to wager on everything from sports outcomes to politics.
The industry encountered regulatory challenges under the previous administration. However it has found a more favorable environment during the current presidency.
Trading on insider information is illegal in the securities markets, but there are less oversight in the forecasting industry.
An official representative for Kalshi said their site "explicitly prohibits such activities of any form."
