A Vietnamese-American astronaut has spoken candidly about her battle with depression after enduring a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a historic all-female space mission.
The 34-year-old activist – celebrated as a researcher and activist – was part of the short-duration mission earlier this year, which also featured well-known figures.
The high-profile flight was heavily criticized by some, who challenged its value and environmental footprint.
Reflecting on the experience, Ms. Nguyen, who was celebrated as the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the negative reaction overshadowed her achievement under an torrent of sexist abuse.
“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” she recounted in a social media post, describing a phone call from a fellow crew member in the period after the journey.
She portrayed the press attention and digital reaction as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.
“Stuck in Texas, I spent a week unable to rise from my bed,” she confessed. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”
The researcher, who has focused her career on gynecological science and performed experiments during the mission, said every professional achievement – including her scientific research and years of training to the historic significance of her heritage – was buried under the tide of misogyny.
She is best known for her groundbreaking advocacy protecting the rights of survivors of assault.
Her own goal of reaching space was put on hold after surviving a rape during her time as a student, leading to a long campaign for accountability.
Now, eight months after reaching space, she has stated the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she thanked the well-wishers whose kindness helped save her. “Your support rescued me,” she affirmed.
She concluded that amid the criticism, important benefits had emerged from the flight, including spotlight on her women's health research and platforms for her activism.
The self-operating spacecraft launched from Texas in the spring, carrying the historic roster on a short trip that crossed the edge of space.
The group of women also featured accomplished professionals from multiple disciplines.
