Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Comments

The English opening batter Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of comments from captain Stokes regarding the dressing room as no place for "weak men".

Stokes made this message in several interviews in the wake of his team's loss in the second match of the Ashes versus Australia earlier this month.

Ahead of the third Test, where the visitors now face defeat at the earliest opportunity, the captain stated he had allowed his message to "drift around" within the playing group.

"I have completed all the talking in recent days that I required," remarked Stokes.

However, following Crawley made a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take everything that is said in the media with some skepticism," he added.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

The captain made the "fragile individuals" observation subsequent to his side were beaten in the second Test to fall two matches behind.

The England squad afterwards went on a holiday to Noosa in the gap between the second and third matches.

Before this match, he revealed his players had held "raw" conversations and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their battle to remain alive in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, Crawley asserted the guidance from Stokes and coach McCullum had stayed in line with their previous tenure in leadership.

"It's been extremely upbeat, the same as always," noted Crawley. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, play our way, with great liberty. It felt like we were capable of an extraordinary feat going into this game."

Australia Close of Rapid Ashes Triumph

The opener's dismissal late on Saturday came during a decisive triple-strike by Australia off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – meant the chasing side six down for 207 in pursuit of a daunting target of 435.

Consequently, the home team need four wickets on Sunday's last day to move to an unassailable three-nil lead with three matches played.

A loss would prolong England's winless run in this country to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth successive away Ashes loss.

This series will be completed in only 11 days of cricket – with England losing the initial matches in two and four days each.

Not since 1921, when Australia completed a series win in England in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been decided so quickly. Australia have also won in 11 days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"It's disappointing," admitted the batsman. "We came here to regain the Ashes and now we are facing elimination now."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we will certainly approach it with that mindset," he continued.

"It's been tough. Australia is a formidable team. It was inevitably tough coming here against them. They were the favourites and have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

While the opener's performance in the third Test probably answers doubts about his immediate future in the England team, Ollie Pope looks under immense pressure for his position in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 in the team's second innings on Saturday, adding to his poor record against Australia.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has failed to score a fifty and boasts an average of 17.62.

A solitary other England player in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top six in the Ashes and recorded a poorer average.

However, Crawley said any suggestion his teammate is under the microscope originates with "you guys" – meaning the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," added he. "He has had a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has produced some really good knocks. It is noise from the outside. There's no chat like that on Ollie amongst the players," Crawley finished.
