European Union Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says

The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unjustified” visa bans issued by the US against five European individuals working on fighting online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe including the French president accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans targeted individuals who have been central to efforts to enact legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in condemning the move.

The bans were imposed on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, as well as several activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities argue the regulations are essential to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a far wider existing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and Europe.
