In a notable development ahead of the upcoming national polls, two prominent personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition comes in the aftermath of large-scale and fatal young people's protests that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the removal of the sitting government.
A Commitment to Tackle Youth Concerns
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly vowed to focus on the issues raised by the younger generation. This commitment comes after the violent anti-corruption unrest that took place in September, which led to significant casualties.
"Consensus should not be what a leader wants, it must be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane after the agreement was signed.
The late summer revolt was sparked by widespread anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a catalyst for deeper discontent stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and longstanding allegations of deep-rooted political corruption.
Terms of the Fresh Political Agreement
According to the formal pact, the positions for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing broad public dissatisfaction with the country's older political leadership. He has previously served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key figure in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He played a role in setting up the caretaker government that took over after the ousted administration was removed.
Wider Government Discussions Taking Place
In a related development, the current interim prime minister over the weekend held consultations with several major political leaders. These discussions involved former prime ministers and the heads of rival major parties, marking the initial such gathering since the period of the protests.
Following these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that conducting a credible election is a shared duty. The message affirmed the government's dedication to guaranteeing a secure and open atmosphere for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
