That encompasses people such as ourselves – within elder demographics close to half – who were raised as mainline Protestant Christians.
We have observed across decades as politically conservative religious groups turned the Jesus we learned about into exactly the opposite of our perception of his character. At its most basic, they converted a persona of compassion into an icon of animosity who blesses exactly the harshness that he condemned in biblical teachings; this has happened more gradually, through multiple decades instead of months, but it is nonetheless disconcerting through similar means, a confusing personal impact for countless people.
A Damaging Christianity Gains Ground
So let me first describe the Christ from my upbringing, because theoretically the Savior is the core of any Christian faith, and because the quickly increasing segment among Americans might have little sense of him since they are atheists or doubters or spiritual independents. I have no problem with any of these traditions, nor with alternative spiritual paths; yet I maintain that exist valuable insights of substantial value in biblical accounts.
It is emphatically not the narrative of a mighty king appearing; rather, a child comes into the world to displaced parents in an automotive shelter, who must quickly flee to a foreign land to evade undercover officers. The child matures in humble circumstances, an employed craftsman; his doctrine concerns compassion for others, especially for the impoverished – and not a sentimental love, but a concrete one, expressed by feeding and housing. Jesus' answer to aggression is to turn the opposite cheek – not as a demonstration of submissive tolerance, but as a way to educate the attacker; his crime policy indicates that whenever someone steals your coat you must offer the person your additional clothing as well.
The obvious and direct reality that the Savior from scripture advocates for a type of profound affection focused on the poor is what has always made the Christian faith somewhat of a scandalous religion: attractive to the general public, but due to its inherent radicalness demanding to be contained. In the 1950s it was controlled by dilution – The Protestant faith was so prevalent that it essentially baptized the status quo.
A Battle for the Highest of Us
Hence I have become encouraged to see the determined opposition to Trump emerge in this past year. It has been great solace to assist in constructing the movement that has protested openly via continuous gatherings, and seems to have inspired voters to show up in large quantities in interim political contests. We will need to persist with it, and through comparable resolve, displaying national flags at every demonstration and requests to the highest qualities of American history.
